Whether you are planning a redesign of your current site or launching your first one, there things to consider as you start the process. Your online presence should represent you and draw in your target audience. But how do you find your style?
- Know what you like. Make a list of sites and blogs that you love. Think about what it is that you like about them. Is it the color? The layout? Just one specific element like the social icons or contact form?
- Know your competition. Ok, so maybe you’re not actually competing, but check what out is going on in your niche or target market. You want to stand out and above the crowd. What can make your site special?
- Be ready to collaborate. Working with a designer is a collaborative process. You bring your list of wishes and what you like to the table and a designer brings the know-how, professional expertise, and their creativity. Together you create something amazing. If you are wide open to suggestions that’s cool, but most designers like to have some participation in the design decisions even if just general ideas like ‘bold and clean’.
- Use the talent of your designer. Remember why you hired a designer and use their talent. Use the expertise they offer. They spend a lot of time on the Web, it’s their job. They see the trends and what works and what doesn’t work. Your designer is on your side and wants your site to be a success.
This is not a comprehensive list by any means, but a few things to think about as you consider your new design and find a designer that will be a good fit for your project. Do you have other suggestions for the beginning of the design process?
